"I am so glad to see that the hostel continues to grow and cater for its visitors. I've been bringing students to this beautiful house since 2002. It provides an excellent base for carrying out river studies within the Borrowdale Valley. Over the years hundreds of Essex students have been knee-deep in water collecting data, but however cold or wet we have got, a warm welcome has always been provided by the hostel. Students always remember this place: it’s often the first thing they mention to me after years have gone by and they are all grown up. A big thank you from a teacher and all the Thurstable as well as Moulsham students that have been here."

DIH Fund for all areas

We can provide subsidies based on approximate group size and financial need. Subject to availability, we can also provide free half-day educational sessions with our Education Officer.

Please fill in the DIH Fund Application Form to help us assess your need and award an appropriate subsidy. We understand you might not have definite plans for a residential yet (particularly if things are dependent on cost!) but we are happy to discuss your ideas by phone or email. You can download the application form here, and email it to, for the attention of Katy Moore. We look forward to hearing from you.

DIH Fund for specific areas

The Sir John Fisher Foundation Fund for Barrow area schools

We are delighted to announce a new fund for subsidising educational residentials for Barrow area schools. This is thanks to a generous grant from the Sir John Fisher Foundation. The grant will allow a subsidy of £25 per pupil, up to a total of £1000 per school group. Please email, phone, or pop in to see us if you are interested in taking advantage of the fund.

Allerdale and Copeland area

In 2014 we created the DIH Fund to subsidise residential educational visits for schools from Allerdale and Copeland (Cumbria). This was made possible with grants from the Hadfield Trust, the Quarry Hill Grassroots Grant Fund, and the Cumberland Building Society Charitable Foundation, for which we are very grateful. The funds were allocated to 6 different school groups (340 pupils) from Allerdale and Copeland, and all of their 360° Education + Adventure residentials were delivered by September 2015. Click here for a photo report of the subsidised residentials. This fund is now closed for the moment.
